Well… where to even start???
The last 7 months have been a strange time… a strange and ‘quiet’ time actually…
Way back in July last year fireworks were completely banned on Koh Samui (and the neighbouring islands) by the Military… who essentially wanted to identify unlicensed/illegal firework sellers here on the island. Although we (The Firework Shop) were legally licensed to shoot anywhere in Thailand, the Military ‘requested’ we not sell, or shoot fireworks until they gave the ‘OK’… of course we complied with that request…
After 4 months – and the closure of the businesses of 2 main unlicensed suppliers here on this island) the Military were on the verge of giving us the ‘OK’ to start shooting again when, on October 13th, 2016, His Majesty Rama 9 – a most revered and respected King of Thailand – sadly passed away.
The country went into mourning immediately of course… and fireworks were (rightly in my opinion) considered inappropriate for a country in mourning… at least for the first 100 days of the mourning period.
That 100 day mourning period is now over, and, although the country continues to mourn … with most events ‘toned down’…. fireworks are now considered acceptable – particularly as they are almost exclusively ‘tourist related’… destination weddings being the major business stream (and Samui in particular probably one of the most popular choices for destination weddings… hence the number of amazing wedding and event planners that base themselves here!). Take a look at our ‘recommended suppliers’ page 🙂
Although we are now back in business, we have made the decision to max out with 6 inch mortars… nothing bigger (not that our 6 inchers aren’t huge and amazing enough!)… this is our effort in ‘toning down’ a little out of respect to the Late King 🙁
We were given permission for a relatively restricted New Year’s Eve this year… the permission to shoot coming very (VERY) late in the day… simply too late to ‘call in the troops’ for training etc… so – due to staff numbers – we had to ‘top out’ at only 9 bookings… compromising on safety levels by taking more bookings was not an option. Profuse and sincere apologies to all those we had to turn down 🙁 … we will do our best to make up for it next time! 🙂
Due to the confusion around the new regulations for fireworks, our first booking of the New Year didn’t happen until mid-January… and we were expecting a slow build up of bookings over the next couple of months… hopefully with us back close to our previous level, averaging 25+ bookings each month in around 3 – 5 months time…
Yeah…. right! … No Chance! ha ha
We have 28 confirmed bookings over the next 5 weeks, with 3 waiting for final confirmation! YEEEEE HA! 🙂
I suppose you could say that we are …. ‘BACK WITH A BANG!’ (sorry lol)
Of course, ‘the guys N gals’ are delighted to be back to work too. Most of them have full-time jobs or other incomes… but they LOVE fireworks haha… they missed the smells… the feeling they get when it all goes well… the noise… the excitement… and the beauty. They also missed the camaraderie of working in a close knit team… looking out for each other… checking… checking again…BUT… most of all they really missed ‘PRESSING THE BUTTONS!’ hahaha …
It is great to see everyone getting right back into things, but we didn’t (entirely) waste our ‘period of rest’! lol The time gave us the opportunity to relax and have a think about how we were doing things… how could we ‘improve’ something (anything)… or how we could give better service… provide even better memories… or more options… next gen. fireworks… more ‘fun’ lance-work options… etc…
THAT is exactly what we have done! 🙂
Oh Yeah?… So then… what is ‘better’? …..
… well….. ‘everything’ really … 🙂
Hopefully you will be suitably and appropriately both amazed and delighted as more vids and pics get uploaded 🙂
… and we have ideas… lots of ideas… good ones,,, good ideas… believe me… probably the best ideas… you would be surprised how good… believe me… true! 🙂
New Firework Regulations!
The new regulations regarding fireworks have been in place since Jan. 1st, and could well be said to be still ‘evolving’ … They do however present a few small(ish) hoops that must be jumped through; these being explained in a little more detail below…
- All firework bookings must be registered with the local government (Amphur) at least 15 days before the date of the booking…
- Registration at Amphur can only be made by a Thai representative of the VENUE (ie: where the firework display will take place). If you are using the services of a Wedding Planner or Event Planner then they will be aware of the new regulations and will handle it all. We would liaise closely with your planner (and the venue) to ensure all goes well.
- If you are not using a wedding or event planner, and planning your event yourself – then we will need to know where you are staying so that we can liaise with your venue (resort/hotel) contact to help with the ‘hoop jumping’ 🙂
- <Get ready for this bit….> Fireworks can only be shot between the hours of 11 pm and 1 am… yes… that is 2300hrs to 0100hrs!
- After the venue have been given the ‘OK’ from Amphur (and ONLY after the OK has been given) there may be a little lee-way with regards to an earlier shoot time possibly being allowed (in certain special conditions). This is entirely up to the Amphur, and each request from us for an earlier shoot time will be treated on a case-by-case basis… with no guarantees.
And there we have it! 🙂
Basically the main thing is to remember the 15 day advance notice period required by the Amphur… the rest is up to the wedding/event planner… the venue… and US to sort out! lol

A somewhat belated (but none-the-less sincere for that) ‘HAPPY NEW YEAR’ ! La-on and I wish you everything good that you would wish for yourselves in this new year… stay safe… stay healthy… smile a lot… stay strong… stay young at heart… and KEEP PRESSING BUTTONS! 🙂
Peace and Love (and lots of fireworks) to the world! … oh… and MORE fireworks please!!! 🙂
